5 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day in the LA Fashion District

Earth Day can be celebrated in so many ways. Showing our appreciation to Mother Earth can be as simple as picking up trash in our local communities, or it can be used more broadly to bring awareness and inspire actions that make real environmental impact. However you choose to celebrate this magnificent planet, we encourage you to go beyond April 22nd. Here are a few super fun, fashionable, and delicious ways you can show your appreciation to our Earth all year around right here in the LA Fashion District!

Shop Sustainable Brands

4.22.19 | 9am – 2pm | CMC Lobby

In celebration of Earth Day, the California Market Center is hosting a special Earth Day Sample Sale Pop-Up Shop in the lobby of CMC. The pop-up will spotlight sustainability with a curated selection of brands known for their sustainability and socially conscious business practices.

That’s not all – CMC is also giving away a $200 Gift Certificate from one of the Earth Day Pop-Up vendors. You’ll be able to pick up a raffle ticket at the Event Info Desk and you must be present to claim your prize when the drawing is held at 1pm.

Featured Earth Pop-Up brands include:

Accoutrements LA, Arsayo Paris, CLED Jewelry, The Giving Keys, Johnny Concert Beauty, Native Shoes, Pao Tea, Parkland Bags, RockDoodles, and Taylor + Thomas Footwear.

Devour Wild Living Foods

760 S Main Street | 9am – 11pm

A lifestyle that speaks for itself. Live WILD.

Wild Living Foods offers a colorful menu – breakfast, lunch and dinner – from a fully organic plant based kitchen. We won’t go into the various ways meat consumption takes a toll on environmental resources, but we will encourage you to try eating vegetarian and/or vegan meals for the day. If devouring delicious Chocolate Mousse Crepes, Avocado Toast, and Flat Earth Pizza is what we have to do to save the planet, those are certainly “sacrifices” we’re willing to make ; )

Shop Second Hand

You can totally stay fashion forward and contribute to lessening clothing waste by shopping second hand. If there’s one thing we know about fashion, it’s that most trends are recycled. Reduce your fashion footprint by shopping for pieces at these local thrift stores:

Support Local Farmers

Wednesdays | 9am – 2pm | CMC Plaza

Another way to celebrate Earth Day (and you can do this all year) is to support local farmers and contribute to the local economy by shopping our local Farmers Market. CMC’s Farmers Market offers chef-grade, certified organic, and sustainable produce, honey, eggs, nuts, and much more.

Ride Metro

This year, the Metro Board approved FREE train and bus rides on Earth Day. These free rides are designed to help reduce auto emissions, promote a healthy and sustainable environment, and combat climate change. Just think…if we all made Metro part of our daily commutes, we’d all save a half ton of CO2 emissions over the course of a year. Do it for Mother Earth!

5 Coachella Essentials from the LA Fashion District

You’re probably either on your way to Coachella, already at Coachella, or having a serious case of Coachella FOMO. Whichever applies, this Coachella Essentials list is for you…because there’s always next year, right?!

1. The perfect outfit from Hellen’s Sample Shop, 810 E Pico Blvd #134. We guarantee you’ll find either a complete look for Coachella at Hellen’s OR you’ll find the perfect pieces to complete the perfect look. Win-win either way.

2. Accessories from Urban Outfitters, 810 S Broadway. You’re not doing Coachella (or any festival) right without accessories. Besides the usual statement pieces, we definitely recommend: a fanny pack and bandanna(s). You can thank us later!

3. A handmade flower crown from Oldvine Florals, 132 W 7th St. It’s almost a crime to NOT have a flower crown at Coachella. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! The fresh sunflower crown pictured below will last an entire weekend in Coachella Valley. Pop into Oldvine Florals’ location or email them to book an appointment for you and your gals at their Flower Crown Bar!

4. Original piece(s) from Virgo, 216 E 9th St. It’s Coachella, so you obviously have to be original. Virgo’s been busy lately making some original pieces specifically for festival season. Check our their IG for a preview of what you can expect to see in store — you can also DM them to purchase pieces!

5. Sunglasses from The Santee Alley. Because there’s no such thing as too many sunglasses — especially during festival season! If you don’t want to break the bank pairing the perfect sunnies with every outfit, or take a chance on losing your favorite shades during a killer set, build a super affordable collection of various shapes, sizes and colors from shops in the Santee Alley.

PARKING

A list of local parking structures and lots can be found here.

TIPS FOR BUYERS

    1. Time management: Managing your time while at Market Week is crucial. We recommend buyers make appointments with popular brands early, as they tend to book up quickly. We also suggest allotting time to walk the buildings, because sometimes the biggest successes are the showrooms you stumble upon by accident.
    2. Pre-plan: Buyers who come with a clear vision for what kind of styles and brands they are looking for will have a more successful market experience. Know your shopper and research brands you might be interested in ahead of time. We also recommend visiting trade show and showroom buildings’ websites and pre-register when possible. Lastly, as a buyer, make sure your inventory and budget levels are well planned out before your visit.
    3. Network: Building strong connections while attending LA Market Week can lead to lasting partnerships with vendors. Bring business cards and always follow up with new partners. Take advantage of educational and networking events whenever possible.

BONUS TIPS

  • Free parking at the CMC for registered buyers.
  • Neihule Salon + Academy will be having special pricing just for Market Week. Call now to make your appointment: (213)395-0947
