One Leg at Time consisted of a three-month residency at the CIW where participants learned to connect to a creative, self-affirming space of inner freedom in support of cultivating mental and physical vulnerability. The exhibition challenges both participants and audience members to evaluate how the arts can inform the conversation around mental health, and sexual and physical abuse among incarcerated women. Attendees will be walking in the footsteps of the participants, witnessing a performance by the teaching artists, and participating in a panel discussion. This journey will allow all walks of life to be encapsulated in the participants’ world, bridging the gap between the free and the incarcerated and fostering greater understanding, empathy and respect. Concluding the journey, spectators will be met by dancers embodying the women’s experiences.
